In the 1930s very little rain fell in the central states of the USA. The poor soil broke up and turned to dust. Then the strong winds blew away the dust and the soil disappeared.
The Joad family are forced to leave their farm to find work picking fruit in California cannot pay the people who have come to pick the fruit.
In the soul of the people, the grapes of wrath were ripening. The people were ready now for a terrible harvest- for a time of anger and destruction.
